Aeration provides the necessary oxygen to your fish and other living organisms in your pond. A bio-filter consists of any matter (such as bio-balls, coarse filter pads, bio-beads, rocks, etc.) that has an abundance of surface area that allows beneficial (good types) of bacteria to grow. This good type of bacteria does many vital things to your pond or water garden including: It 'eats' some of the same nutrients in your pond that pond algae does. Therefore, having a good source of beneficial bacteria in your pond starves out the algae and results in clearer pond water. It breaks down toxic ammonia from fish wastes into nitrites and nitrates which become useful in the pond's ecosystem. This is refered to as the nitrogen cycle within the pond. Without a good colony of beneficial bacteria in your pond, your fish would die from their own natural wastes (feces, urine and carbon dioxide). It breaks down organic matter in the pond from fallen leaves, fertilizers, build up of dead aquatic weeds, twigs, logs, etc. All of the above types of organic matter (and more than what's listed) rob your pond of necessary oxygen that your fish and other vital living organisms within your pond need to survive. All bodies of water need beneficial bacteria whether it's a small backyard pond, koi pond or large fish pond. We suggest adding Microbe Lift beneficial bacteria for small backyard and koi ponds less than 50' x 50'. We recommend using our BioClean beneficial bacteria for larger ponds and lakes larger than 50' x 50' in size. 	Pond Skimmers Pond skimmers are a plastic structure that sits next to the pond's edge that holds the pond pump on one side and a netting material on the other side. Each side is divided by a pond filter pad. Water is siphoned through the skimmer by the power of the pond pump. The water enters the large opening where the net is that catches larger debris. Water then passes through the pond filter pad where smaller debris is trapped. The water continues to flow on the other side of the skimmer where the pump is at and the pump continues to siphon the water through the pump and out the discharge side of the pump where pump tubing is connected. This tubing then runs up to a filter, an Aquafall waterfall unit, a stream or an UV clarifier. The purpose of the pond skimmer is to collect the larger debris that floats on the surface of the pond like fallen leaves, paper, etc. before it settles on the bottom of the pond and adds to the organic 'compost' at the bottom of the pond that provides nutrition and causes unwanted pond algae (green pond water), unwanted pond weeds and pond plants to grow.
